On the road
Driving essentials
Roads, weather, driving rules and departure checks.
Read the road before you go
A few signs and rules you will encounter on Icelandic roads.
Single-lane bridge
Slow down and check approaching traffic. If unsure, give way and wait for the bridge to clear.
Pavement becomes gravel
Reduce speed before reaching the gravel. Steer steadily and avoid abrupt braking.
Blind crest
Slow down and keep right. An approaching vehicle may be hidden beyond the crest.
Risk of ice
Slow down, leave more space and use gentle inputs. Ice can be present without visible snow.
Two-lane roundabout
Give way to vehicles exiting from the inner lane. Watch the inner lane and signal when leaving.
Closed means closed
Do not drive past closure signs or barriers. A navigation route does not override a road closure.
Common speed limits
30–50Urban areas
80Gravel roads
90Rural paved roads
km/h. Follow posted signs and reduce speed for weather and road conditions.
Lights on, all day
Use the required driving lights throughout the year and check the rear lights; automatic daytime lights may illuminate only the front.
Every seat, every seatbelt
Passengers in front and back must wear seatbelts. Children need a suitable restraint for their height, weight and age.
Stay on the road
Do not drive off-road. F-roads are roads, not permission to drive across open land. Check access and vehicle requirements before setting off.
