Nature

What makes the sand black?

Volcanic material gives the coast its distinctive colour.

Volcanic material gives Reynisfjara its dark sand. The nearby basalt columns formed as lava cooled. Along this coast, volcanic geology meets the continuing work of the sea.

Photograph the waves from well back. Sneaker waves can reach the shore unexpectedly, even when the water looks calm. Follow local warnings and barriers, stay away from the water’s edge and never turn your back on the sea.

Enjoy the contrast, and leave plenty of room for the sea.
