Why do ice caves change every year?

A meltwater channel can become a winter ice cave.

Many glacier caves begin as channels cut by meltwater within or beneath a glacier. Summer water reshapes these passages; some may become exposed as the flow decreases.

Ice, temperature and water keep changing, so a cave photographed last year may not look the same this year. Access depends on current conditions and should be assessed by a qualified glacier guide.

An ice cave is a changing landscape, not a permanent room.
