Nature

Can you walk on Iceland’s moss?

It looks like a carpet, but recovers very slowly.

The highland growing season is short, and vegetation is sensitive to trampling. A thick-looking layer of moss is not a durable lawn: damaged moss can take decades to regrow.

Stay on designated paths when taking photographs. Do not cross barriers or step onto the moss for a better angle. Keeping your feet on the trail helps preserve the landscape for the next visitor.

Keep the green in your photographs and your feet on the trail.
