Landmannalaugar in a day

Choose a day among lava paths and mountain summits, guided by weather and your own capacity.

A day in Landmannalaugar does not need to include every summit. Confirm transport and current highland conditions first, then choose a suitable combination of Laugahraun, Brennisteinsalda and Bláhnúkur.

Choose the walk before planning the day

Laugahraun focuses attention on lava textures and the valley. Brennisteinsalda and Bláhnúkur involve more ascent. Consider a single summit separately from a two-summit combination, rather than adding distance simply because you are already there.

Laugahraun: begin with the lava

Use the marked paths near the hut to explore the lava beside Laugahraun’s mountain slopes. This can be the main walk of the day or part of a longer route. Choose the return using the current local trail map, without cutting across fragile ground.

Brennisteinsalda: colour and ascent

Geothermal alteration and mineral deposits contribute to the mountain’s colours. Marked paths connect its ascent with the Laugavegur area and return options. Wind at the summit can differ from the valley: assess exposure, visibility and your ability before committing to the top.

Bláhnúkur: a view shaped by the weather

Marked routes lead up Bláhnúkur from near the hut, gradually revealing the mountain and lava landscape. Descent options differ. Check steep ground, snow and river conditions locally rather than following a crossing described in an old trip report.

Two summits are an option, not an obligation

When conditions and your capacity allow, maintained paths can link the summits and lava area. Decide on a turnaround point and return time, allowing for rest, photographs and any booked transport. Shortening the walk in wind, rain or fatigue is a valid plan.

Transport, parking and reservations

Landmannalaugar is in the Fjallabak Nature Reserve. Road authorities open its highland approaches according to conditions; surfaces and river crossings differ by route. Check the exact road, rental permission and current access. Summer parking reservations and service fees apply to private arrivals during specified hours; use the current official rules.

Before setting out

Bring layers suited to wind and rain, hiking footwear, water, food and official trail information available offline. Check weather, roads, your chosen path and return transport separately. The multi-day Laugavegur trek is a different undertaking from a day walk here.

Bathing and the landscape

Decide whether to bathe using current local notices. Follow the boardwalk to the designated stretch, keep soap and glass containers away from the water and take litter with you. Steaming vents along the trails are not bathing pools.
