ICELANDIC FOLKLORE

Gunnuhver geothermal area

Gunna and the steaming spring

Gunna í Gunnuhver

A cooking pot, unpaid rent and a ball of yarn tie Gunna's name to a geothermal landscape.

In one telling, Gunna could not pay her rent, and her landlord took her cooking pot. After her death, frightening events nearby were attributed to her returning spirit.

The community turned to the pastor Eiríkur. His device in the story was a ball of yarn: its unravelling thread drew Gunna towards a geothermal spring.

The endings differ. In some she falls in; in others she cannot release the thread and keeps circling the rim. Geothermal processes explain the steam. The name preserves the legend.

Documented history

Gunnuhver is a real geothermal area on Reykjanes. The regional tourism authority also records the connection between its name and Guðrún, called Gunna.

Versions & sources

The alleged cause varies between unpaid rent and theft; the ending varies between falling into the spring and circling it. These are narrative variants, not established events.
